Wheelchair Medicare Update

A new Medicare fee schedule has gone into effect, attempting to crack down on fraud and abuse in the power chair industry. About eighty per cent of the cost of a wheelchair is paid by Medicare and the purchaser pays about twenty. This twenty per cent is often paid for by the person’s insurance company.

Now the Medicare reimbursement has been cut to just over $2,000, not as much as feared but still a substantial cut. Suppliers of high end chairs will get an increase of about $1,000 in the reimbursement for a total of about $4,800 (about $1200 less than the old fee). So not as bad as the industry predicted, not as good as they wanted. Sounds like a compromise.
