Kitchens, style and woods

Remodeling your kitchen can be a nightmare of details and destruction before the final nail is hammered home and you can revel in your new Martha extravaganza. Just one detail, the cabinets can be a conundrum in itself. Here’s a look at some of the details you may want to consider before you start.

What kind of style are you going for in the kitchen…traditional? Modern? French country? There are three basic styles to choose from.
- Traditional - You can see the frame or “boxes” with the doors being a tad smaller than the frame.
- European – more modern, the full doors close flush with the cabinet frame
- Semi European – the doors almost cover the frame

What kind of wood will you choose? Combine type of wood or material plus the paint or stain that can go on it and the choice will prepare you for the funny farm. The basic woods include
- Oak (currently considered very ‘80’s and usually has a light finish)
- Cherry (expensive and the stain usually darkens over time)
- Maple (light in color with a tight even grain)
- Birch (light like maple)
- Ash (lots of color hues that make for interesting staining…often painted)

If you get this far with an idea of where you need to go next you are way ahead of the remodeling game.
