Kitchen cabinets and drawers - how to spot quality

Let’s take another look at the kitchen cabinet remodel. Once you decide on style and material, think doors…they should be wood for stability and maintenance. You can get some very good cabinets in mdf or “fake” wood, made up of wood particles but there are some poor quality ones available as well. Make sure the doors have clean 45 degree angles, that they are plumb (straight up and down) and square (perfect 90 degree angled corners), and that they have no cracks or holes. Don’t be afraid to return doors that are not up to par.

The drawers are another place to look for quality. Choose drawers with strong joints, dove tailed are the strongest. Joints should also be glued and nailed for extra strength…they are going to be in and out countless times and you want them to last.

The guides should be strong metal either on the sides or on the bottom of the drawers…the silhouette when open is a lot cleaner looking when the glides are on the bottom of the drawer however. Keep away from plastic guides that will fail sooner than the metal. Check out how far the drawer pulls out. To access the back of the drawer, make sure the drawer can be pulled out at least 75 % if not 100% of the way.

All these details are going to give you a kitchen that will function along with the beautiful form.
