Anyone know how did the miele canister was rated in the Consumer Reports in October 2008?What was the powerbrush used in the test?(SEb236?) Thanks so much! If your leaning towards an upright with on board tools, look at the aerus/electrolux,proteam xp15 commercial upright,lindhaus activa [the red one], and under the 200 00 range the SANITAIREsc785 or 782. The X5 is also a good choice. Maybe a rebuilt or near new kirby[ultimateG,diamond edition,sentria, or any generation series kirbys from the g4 up,

I am looking for a vacuum that mainly excel well in carpets as my house is almost carpet and have not been vacuum for like "5years" after my old two vax carpet washer that use "died",
More importantly I am looking for a reliable vacuum and long lasting even though I considered the dyson however it is not reliable. I am not sure whether to buy water based machines(eg. Hoover steamvac, vax, bisell,carpet shampooers)) for the carpets or use a vacuum like Sebo. Which type is more effective in cleaning and cost effective? I do not really mind canisters or upright. However I know that Sebo is one of the best upright? Miele vac are good however expensive and need to buy bags this and that. If the Sebo does not filter well , then just wear an N95 mask.

I'm getting mixed signals:  You mind the cost of the bags but don't want to buy a dyson?  That leaves Rexair/Rainbow [water based] and the less expensive knockoffs and Filter Queen [which uses paper cones].  All the others:  Aerus [the new Electrolux of old] SEBO, MIELE, RICCAR/SIMPLICITY, Lindhaus, Kirby and all the top shelf vacuums are bagged.  If you want bagless other than dyson, FQ, and Rainbow, you're getting into the big box retail stores' sales venue with the likes of brands like dyson, HOOVER, BISSELL, DIRT DEVIL, EUREKA, Sears Progressive/Intuition and so on.  Not the best for longevity and dependability save 3-5-7 years of household usage depending on model and price.

STEAMVACS, like the HOOVER All Terrain, are for shampoo/cleaning rugs.  And are used in concert with daily vacuuming not in lieu of daily vacuuming.  While these rug cleaners are good investments for household use, you should postpone buying and using.  First, purchase/use a vacuum on the carpets daily for several weeks to get all the dirt out of your carpets, before you shampoo and clean.

All machines require parts and service after 1 or 2 years , might want to stick with a company that manufactures cleaners for a core business, when your vacuum needs service the service rep or repair tech says i'm awfully sorry but your machine is obsolete and we can not get the parts anymore, This goes on a lot more so at the big box stores service desk. Just pay the extra money and get everything that goes with it.

Believe me i know how parts manufactures work,i know because im also a parts wholesaler..........

If you like the SEBO upright, then I would suggest that you purchase it.  Make sure it meets all of you needs.  You said that you have alot of carpeting.  It filters well and the bags will not cost as much as Miele.  SEBO vacuum cleaners are very reliable, like Miele.   Am I correct in assuming that you are not in North America?

You may be confused about vacuum cleaners and Carpet washers(Steam cleaners/Extractors in the U.S.)  Vacuum cleaners are used on a regular basis like once a week.  They pick up dirt debris like hair, dirt, etc.  Carpet washers are used occasionally, like once or twice a year.  They are used after you first vacuum.  It then loosens and picks up any hidden soil and grime attached to the carpeting.  The machine applies a cleaning solution, scrubs the carpeting, then sucks the dirt solution up into a tank.  You should not use a Carpet washer instead of a vacuum cleaner.  If you have carpeting, it would be beneficial to always have a vacuum cleaner.

Speaking from personal experience with Sebo vacuums, i would suggest following your feelings on it and buying it.  I have a much older version of what is now the X4, the 12 inch, where the X5 is the wider 15  inch.  I think it is a very good machine.

I'm not sure that Sebo or Miele offers any sort of carpet cleaner. Sebo isn't easy to repair, but the benefit is that Sebo NEVER breaks down. With a Sebo, you simply change bags and filters. If you want a cheaper, good quality vacuum i would recommend looking at Sanitaire Vacuums. Sanitaire vacuums are very easy to maintain and repair when needed. Their commercial vacuums but can be used in the home. I dont think you can go wrong either way, just depends on what you want to spend.

Yes a vacuum cleaner is a daily use item a carpet washer once or twice a year, although I have repairs on washers that look like the do not own a vacuum LOL like other vac guy said Sebo and Sanitair excellent choices
