Favorite 4th of July recipes?
Original Message   Jul 2, 2005 1:30 pm
Most of us have certain traditions that we observe on Independence day.
Family picnics...fireworks....hotdogs and potato salad.....what could be more American than that.
I paricularly like the eating part of it all.....a wiener cooked over charcoal, slathered with mustard and chopped onions...ummmmmm-um!
Over the years I have discovered that when I say hot dog here in Detroit....it isnt the same hot dog that people in other parts of the country enjoy.
Down south they put coleslow on thier wieners....In Chicago, they do all kinds of other things with thier sausages. (Pickles and sliced tomatoes????) Deep fried hotdogs in Philly?
My point is....I would like too hear what other folks enjoy for thier 4th of July feasts. Different strokes....from different folks.
My wife and I like too start our holiday with a breakfast treat.
It's real easy too make.....just a banana and a cantalope.

Lint, I'm with you buddy. I enjoy fruit as much as the next guy. Matter of fact I find that having a fresh juicy peach is just next to being in heaven.

I totally agree Marshall.
When the wife and I start our day with a good breakfast, it puts a smile on our faces for the rest of the day.

Athought I have never had the Wisconsion version....I have had them in Montreal.
The French blend in mashed anchovy filets and garlic. The aroma is just heavenly.

Paula...

The guys were talking about eating healthy. Cheese curds definitely doesn't fit the same food group as cantaloupe and bananas or nice juicy peaches.

Myself I like a nice pair of grapefruit. Just peel them like oranges and eat them, two at a time.

Some folks are more the mellon type..honey dew mellons and great big watermellons. They've never turned me on, I must admit.

I must admit our foods aren't as deeply steeped in tradition as yours....nor are they as succulent and juicy...but we make moo...I mean..do...

And how exactly would you filet an anchovy?    The garlic sounds pretty good

Paula, Paula, Paula, surely you know the meat group very well.

A Bratwurst laying right some Kraut.......

A special recipe or way of preparation. Depending on size, you might need the XL Magnum wrapper, the sheer ones tend to break easily and therefore are not recommended for big ones. The tip allows juices to stay in and not leak out, it makes the total experience safer, especially during cooking. Paula you could even save the juice for later.

You got that right, Marshall.
The secret is in the way you prepare those things.
To much heat, too fast and you wind up with a mess on your hands.
When I find mine is heating up too fast......I just cool it off by sticking it in a glass of nice cold beer.
The beer cools it off and imparts a nice flavor too both my brat and the beer.

No actually I don't.....I'm very selective on what I take home from the meat department.....  And, despite my Wisconsin roots, I'm not a big fan of saur kraut...too stringy and sour for my taste.

Yeah, I hear that the sour taste will make a spitter out of many that try it........

You guys down south are really lucky.
I bet that the "corn is as high as an elephants eye by the 4th of July" down in the south.
All we get up north is this imported produce from South America......(Not sweet... dry.... 2 ears for a buck garbage.)
What's more American than fresh, roasted corn on the cob.

The one crop that is starting too come in up north are our cucumbers.
What's better than sour cream, onions, dill and your favorite variety?
Or....Olive oil and vinegar, basil and oregano?
We grow several different types in our garden.
Mrs. 'Lint is partial the Italian type.............She says that they are a lot firmer and hold up better than the others. (Being a Piason...I have too agree.)
(She doesnt choke on the seeds either.)

Depends on how its prepared....sour kraut kind of speaks for itself although I am sure it tastes fine on hot dogs....but then there is sweet kraut...sweet yet tangy on the tongue and much tastier with brats...

If you slice some apples up and put them in the kraut, the kraut tends to be more mild.

Paula,
You have too remember that the Potato famine wasnt just about the potatoes....
It also had a devestating effect on many of thier other crops.....thier cukes in particular.

Rob,
That's a good tip. A little apple mixed in with saurkraut really takes the edge off.  (Brown sugar is another good addition.)
You really should check your soil before you plant carrots....They like a sandy soil, with no obstruction too thier growth...it a appears that you might be planting them in an area that is quite rocky.

Good tips for the sour kraut.  I'll eat what they make for me.  I like my wieners deep in with some mustard and onions.   I also like the firmness of the fleshy watermelon.

A Fourth of July without Melons just isn't American. Yea, I have noticed that women really like melons.
It seems I am always seeing women with big melons.

This woman is carrying two melons...........

This woman is carrying two melons under her shirt. I presume to keep them dry.

This woman just loves plump juicy melons, she even wears a shirt pointing that out.........

This woman like carrying her two melons in her hands........and if ones a little bigger than the other, what the heck.
As long as they are succulant, who cares?

Now these ladies have come up with a different melon......one more suited for their taste.

Don't forget that you can also get a lot of good nutrition from natures natural source of liquid nourishmen:

 BEER

I know that there is another natural source wholesome fun to drink nutritious refreshment out there, but it escapes me right now. Funny, I'm sure the clues are right out front, staring me in the face, but I just can't seem to remember the beverage... clueless in Canada.

And like most movements, celebrities are always jumping on the band wagon to generate more publicity for themselves.
This health food craze is no different. Some are so fanatical that they take their healthy snacks with them wherever they go, even though the transportation of ag products across borders is illegal.  Here is a picture of Britney smuggling raisins............

Yes Paula....
Nature can be a cruel mistress...
If you aren't the perfect tomato, the chances of you adding your DNA too the gene pool are very poor indeed.

Lint, I have also notice that Zucchini is popular with women on holidays. Myself, I've never liked it.

This woman has seems to be real pleased with this big dark one..........

These ladies couldn't be smiling any bigger while fondling these yellow ones..........

Now this gentleman is displaying his record home grown one, must be at least 36 inches.

In addition, evidently "vintage corn" was a big hit.........
