How do I get a small lost item inside my central vacuum system out? It isn't obstructing anything, it's very small.

It will be hard to find it. I would say impossible. What have you lost?

Look in the dust bag. I have done this a few times with portable vacuums. Have a trash bag handy, put some medical gloves on, lay the dust bag on some old newspapers, cut it open and go through the contents until you find what you are looking for. Not fun but sometimes you have to do it.
