KEVIN COSTNER PROPOSES GULF CLEAN UP
Original Message   May 21, 2010 7:54 pm
The famous actor says a combination centrifuge and vacuum cleaner is the answer to the gulf dilemma.  Separates and removes 99 percent of the oil from the water and releases the clean/filtered water back into the gulf.  Wonder if BP, EPA, DHS, Army Corps of Engineers and President Obama will agree and proceed with his suggestion.

Hi Carmine,

Sounds like a cool idea.  Have we had the technology in place all along?

Yes, Venson.  I didn't hear/see the story and coverage.  It was passed along to me because of the "vacuum" connection.  What came to my mind is the application for platelets and plasm with blood donations.  If you are familiar with these machines it takes about 20-30 minutes maybe more to separate one unit/pint of platelets from a donopr's blood and return the blood plasm back to the donor.  The equipment for doing this, even on a small scale like a pint, is expensive.  I opine the same is true with oil and water.  Haven't heard and read anymore about this solution but suspect as BP fumbles in the gulf it we will.

This looks like a simple cleanup solution.

Appears to be a couple of ways to tackle and solve the problems in the gulf.  Just needs leadership to make it happen.

Hi Hardsell,

It certainly is a very practical idea as well as natural and simple.  Guess the big time oil engineers know nothing about what can do waht.  Nonetheless, do you know if we have enough of a supply of hay around to match the volume of the spill?  I ask that because farming of the practical kind is a skill that economics and big business discourages as of late.  The next question would be how to safely dispose of all the collected hay and/or extract  the crude oil adhering to it.

However, if the Costner device is what it's claimed to be I am assuming there's a possibility to make everyone happy in easier fashion.  If it can actually suck up a mix of sea water and crude oil and then spit out sea water that's 97 percent clean, the spill gets cleaned up and the recovered crude oil could be sent to refineries for processing and later sale.  That recouped income might defray the cost of the clean up somewhat though I don't feel BP deserves it.

Carmine, my apologies. I didn't mean to split this thread but somehow did.

Hi Venson:

No problem on the threads.

The oil vacuum appears to be a current and future fix for big time oil spills and off shore drilling.  The hay method is perhaps a one time cure for smallish spills or useful for oil coming up on shore where labor can be used to sop up the oil and gather the dirty oil filled hay for disposal.  If this president is serious about off shore drilling to decrease our dependence on foreign oil AND appease the left wing eco-phobes like VP Gore on the environment, then the oil vacuum technology is the best available way to go.  It should be standard operating procedure to have the technology on all oil rigs [or close by] to attack spills before they ruin the natural resources if a rig blows.

The hay method is a little far fetched for a job of this magnitude.  Perhaps the hay could be used offshore on a small scale to sop up any slop missed by the vac.  The oil should not be allowed to get to shore for laborers to dispose of.  Once in the soil the damage is done.  Better get it up before all of the global warming predicted by Gore.  Hot oil will spread more rapidly.

Having the vacuum on the rig is not so good.  It would end up submerged as did the rig.

Dyson seems the best vacuum to use for this job.

I agree with all.  Since a dyson is barely a fair to middlin vacuum for picking up dirt perhaps it will fare better with oil in water.  Just think of the PR it would muster.  British vacuum inventor James Dyson provides a task force of his dyson vacuums to bail out British Petroleum in the Mexico Gulf.

Line the shore with Dyson bladeless fans and blow the oil back out to sea.  Then plug the spewing hole with old Hoover Z's.

I'd forego the money on the dyson fans and use the oil vacuums instead for the shore oil.  Probably cost about the same: $23 MILLION.
