I'm kind of surprised that the Dyson Dysolv product performed so poorly in the tests, given the high price. 

Curious that the Hoover All Terrain was the highest rated portable carpet cleaner, and that it performed almost as well as a professional service.  why do you think that is?  Do you think the Hoover detergent is superior to that made by Bissell and other vendors?   Or is it something else? 

One thing to keep in mind is that CR did something like 20 passes with the carpet cleaning machines.  They said the Rug Doctor got the carpet too wet.    In practice, you are supposed to prespray stains and then make 1 or 2 passes with the Rug Doctor if I remember correctly.

HOOVER has been producing and marketing rug shampooers and shampoo since the 50's.  I attribute HOOVER's rug shampoo/shampooer success to industry experience and commitment.  When the 2 brush HOOVER shampooer came out it was a huge success even with common household cleaning products like Vel and Dreft for cleaning solutions.  For persons who did not want to purchase the HOOVER solution.  HOOVER has gotten consistently better with the product.  The number of passes are not just to clean but also to remove the liquid/dirt in the rug areas shampooed.  The more you remove the better the result.  Less vacuuming to do after the rugs are clean and dry.

What can I say about dyson's dysolv!  Typical product peddling.  Higher price is snake oil for better product.  NOT!  Dysolv is consistently rated the worse year after year.  If you can't get the small details like cleaning solution right how can you ever produce a range of large household appliances all at once for mass market consumption?  Pie in the sky dreams.

mm Actually Carmine, the current range of Hoover products are TTI thus Dirt Devils in disguise. I wouldn't say that Hoover's machines are any different to rivals on the market.

As for the Dyson Dysolv - well compared with the Bissell stuff, they're both spray types which I don't particularly find useful. Powders are so much easier to control and use generally such as Sebo Duo P. Also male shaving foam is a brilliant one to try for light staining.

You may perceive the best brand being brought down to the worse in an acquisition.  I don't particularly share that view.  As evidence od my perspective, I note that Warren Buffett, a world famous value investor of the ages, owns a 10 percent interest in TTI.  Ironically, or maybe not, he did not make this investment in TTI until after HOOVER was acquired by TTI.  [At one time here I opined that WB might be a buyer of HOOVER.  Well I was wrong, but he did invest in the company that subsequently bought it].  I don't think WB's investment is due to the DIRT DEVIL brand name.  Tho, like them or not DD products are one of the most popular selling in the USA according to NPD.

The most worthwhile floor care machine developed was the Hoover Floor-A-Matic.  You could scrub and suck up dirty solution, poilsh floors and shampoo your rug with this twin brush machine in simple fashion.  I did not buy special cleaners for mine.  Many times I used an ammonia and water solution for general cleaning and to strip wax.  Allowing me a choice of pads, nylon or steel wool, the machine did the job well and -- it's still running though not often pressed into service here at home as my steam cleaner -- no detergent, long cleaning time and multi-faceted with easy maintenance -- is preferred.

I maintain that the Floormate is great for light duty on creamic and man-made flooring (linoleum, vinyl, etc.).  I am still skittish about using one on real wood.  In any event, had one and then set it out on the sidewalk in short order.

Interestingly the electric HOOVER floor washer was first marketed by HOOVER in the late 50's and not very popular for the prices.  In 2000, after HOOVER was acquired by MAYTAG, HOOVER reintroed the product as the Floormate.  It was an instant success and has been selling at all big box retailers since in the $100-$160 price range depending on attachments and solutions.  I have and use one for the last 6 years.  First, for my daughter's house, and now mine two.  Same machine.  Dual use.  Still as good as new.  Perfect, it's not.  But useful and worth the money.  Most definitely.  ESpecially for me, who doesn't like to use a mop.  Recently, the baptism fount at the church overflowed.  No one looking after it while it was being filled.  The Sea of Galilee all over the altar and floor.  7:30 and Mass staring at 8 with persons arriving.  As I was assisting the custodian with mops, I kept thinking if I only had my HOOVER FM this 30 minute 2 man job would be done in 10 minutes.

I have found that a little simple green / greased lightening and some off the stove  hot  water really works great in my spinscrub.....then a water/rinse after a couple hrs..my spinscrub really does a great job on my very light tan carpet.....tried it on my tile in the kitchen...not great...not bad/wife not impressed...will continue to do it by hand. the only thing id change on it would be some slightly stiffer brushes..but its by far the best in-home carpet cleaner for the money...wonder if dyson will design one?hmmm
