HR-215- Transmission- intermitent

I have a 10 year old Honda HR-215-SXA (I believe) with a transmission issue. I borowed it from my inlaws and it hasn't ran for about 8 years. Everything works fine but the transmission. I began running it with the clutch engaged to see if it would "kick in" while mowing. It didn't until the second time i used it and it kicked in at times when I was either pushing down or up hill and/or out of level in one way or another. It seems to me like a linkage problem.?? Any comments would be greatly appreicated....
