Re: 2 Cycle Oil - Ratio and Brand

Good advice by 18 Degrees.  After reading his post, I realized that I have an unused MixMizer  "turkey baster" sitting on a shelf in the garage.  Will have to put it into service & give it a fair test.

I have a 32 oz. Pyrex measuring cup that I purchased at Walmart for $4-$5 for mixing individual tanks, or smaller than a gallon quantities.  Due to the gas in the Milwaukee/Chicago area being an RFG with ethanol, I really try to mix up only the amount of 2 cycle gas that I need for that day or weekend.

Re: A reminder about WD-40

The MSDS listed in the above post makes me chuckle, as it is at least 10 years old & lists propane as the propellant for the aerosol version of WD-40.

WD-40 was widely being used as a starter fluid in many pieces of older tractors & equipment, due to the flammability of the propane.  The WD-40 propellant was changed in the late 90’s to C02 to accommodate transportation & shipping restrictions on volatile materials.

The present WD-40 formulation, per a current MSDS, looks more like this:

CAS 8052-41-3 Stoddard Solvent 50%
CAS 64742-65-0 Petroleum base oil 25%
CAS 64742-47-8 Naptha 15%

The solvents evaporate & leave a residual oily film that will provide light lubrication & rust protection.

Marshall has a good recommendation - the Echo synthetic blend 2 cycle oil is blended & packaged for Echo by Citgo.  I ran this oil in chainsaws over the last couple of months and it is a good, low smoke mix.

As far as mix ratio’s, many people desire additional protection and run the 50:1 mix a little heavy at 2.56 oz to .9 gallons of gas.  This works out to a 45:1 mix ratio.  No problems at all with today’s ISO-LEGD/JASO FC rated oils.

When I run one of older 70’s/80’s era Homelite chainsaws from my collection, I fill the saw with this 45:1 mix & add an additional .1 oz of oil with an eye dropper directly to the saw’s gas tank & then shake it good before use.

Will,

Glad to see that you're back on the forum!  I'm sure it takes alot of your energy just to sit up & read all the posts from your WTB & Abby's friends.

You have my prayers & wishes that your strength will continue to return & that you will be able to get back into your normal routines!

Another pecan season is coming up & we'd all love to hear your reports!

Good Morning!

Would love to see the Log In/ ID Name of the current post on a thread, it's easier to keep track of "who is saying what".

LOL, reminds me of signing on to WTB in the morning and seeing JoeF, like clockwork, working his way thru each thread & adding his "2 cents worth."

Blue
