Stihl 020 AV running problems
Original Message   Jan 31, 2011 6:43 pm
I have an old stihl 020 av chainsaw, the problem I'm having is when you start it and it's running the as soon as you go to give it gas it want to bog out and die even if you just try to give it alittle gas it just seems to bog down and quit, is there a vacume leak on it or where should I try looking?

The saw has a diaphragm carburetor and by the sounds of it, the pumping diaphragm is probably shot.  You can buy a carb kit for around $10.00.  Do a bit of research to find out what carb it has (probably a Tillotson) get, correct model/size of carb then order a kit.  If you have chainsaw dealer nearby, they'll be able to assist you with your problem.  If you do the carb work yourself, do it on a well lit, clean table top and keep track of every little part.  Carefully watch how the old carb comes apart and assemble in reverse order.

A Muffler or spark screen will only plug slowly over time while running...   The carb metering and pump diaphram will go bad just sitting...
