craftsman 8/28, model C950-52378, auger belt
Original Message   Nov 29, 2009 4:04 pm
I am in need of an auger belt but sears doesn't carry this model in their list since its from 1987!!  Anywho if anyone can give me a hint or any sort of help in order to figure out what part number I need to get a new auger belt, I'd really appreciate it.  I live in Northern Ontario canada, so its really important for me to get this thing working before the snow really piles up!

Thanks

Kim

Find a bearing supply outlet in your area to see if the handle belts (most do). Bring the belt into them and they'll match it up with something similar. Make sure they know it's for a snow thrower. A lot of belts are designed for continuous operation (i.e. air conditioners) and might be the same size but won't last. They don't handle the loading and unloading well and don't seem to like cold temperatures either.

Yesterday I was at a bearing place getting a bearing. They had a long wall covered with belts. I asked the guy about belts. What he said was pretty interesting. He said his belts were not so good for tractor use. The reason he said was in that service a tensioner pulley was used and because of that belts had extra material on the back. He said his belts would work but not last as long because of the less substantial backing. In snowblower service those belts would probably be ok. Even if they did not last as long you can get two or three for a price of one manufacturers belt. A better choice would be to use belts from a hardware place like ACE which has yard equipment belts. The prices are still well below manufacturers belts. Most snowblowers use two belts these days. The tractor drive usually does not have a tensioner. The auger drive belt usually does.

Are you sure that is the correct model number for the unit?..  I find info on the web for units older than that all the time...

I have the same model and just had to replace the auger belt as well.  I called Sears' parts number @ 1-800-469-4663 and they were able to find it for me.  Sears part # is 71 C 950 313847 .  You may find it elsewhere too as the belt is made by Murray - belt #313847.     Btw, it's 25.99 from sears plus $6.99 shipping.

might want to order two as I would imagine the shipping would be the same :) Or head into your sears outlet (Thunder Bay, North Bay, Sudbury, Timmins, wherever :) )
