New Ariens 624 - Keeps Stalling after Starting
Original Message   Dec 24, 2008 8:18 pm
I just purchased an Ariens 624 snowblower and ran it for the first time this morning. Started right up and I didn't have any problems clearing the driveway - ran for about 45 minutes. Later in the afternoon, I decided to run it again to clear the snow by the mailbox. Now, it starts just fine, but stalls out after 30 seconds or so. It begins by idling fine (steady), and then not so steady (high and low), and then just stalls out. I read on any old thread here that I should try running without the gas cap, but I haven't tried that yet. Any other ideas? It's a bit disappointing since the thing is brand new!

thanks!

It’s a common problem. The vent in the gas cap gets blocked by snow that melts when the engine is warm and then freezes when it cools off. When the vent is plugged a vacuum is created as the gas runs into carburetor, which eventually prevents the gas from getting into the carburetor and starves the engine. As soon as you start to experience this problem loosen the gas cap to let air in. If that fixes the problem then bring the gas cap into a warm area to let the ice melt and then shake the water out or use compressed air to blow it out. If you don’t have a warm area where you can tolerate the gas smell then try using a thin wire to unplug the vent hole if you can find it.

If loosening the gas cap doesn’t help then make sure the choke is off. You need choke to start a cold engine, but once warm it needs to be off to keep running.

It could be that you have a small drop of frozen water in your carb. a Few flakes of rust from a old rusty gas can.    Or a plugged fuel cap.

If you pour a little gas line antifreeze or pure alcohol onto the inside of the gas cap, it will displace the water.  As previously stated, there is a chance that you have water or dirt in the float bowl.  Keep your fuel tank full and you will minimize condensation accumulating in the tank and on the cap.  You might want to put a bit into the fuel tank as well just in case you have water in the fuel system.

you could have a small piece of gasket material that has got a jet plugged.the orifices are small and it doesn't take much to plug one. on a brand new machine they might be covered with welch plugs you have to remove.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. It started right up and ran fine today. The only thing I did different was take the gas cap, start it, let it run for a bit, and then put the cap back on. Not exactly sure if that did anything as it seems odd, but it ran fine today - no stalling :)

Thanks!
