computer virus crap
Original Message   Jun 1, 2005 9:19 pm
anybody have good program that will keep the spies out of my computer .

seems like every now an then i manage to find some of that stuff hiding in my computer.

not sure what it actually is called.

i think some of the more computer savvy folks remove it manually and i would opt for this if i knew how.

im a little leary of installing new software...im led to beleive but could be wrong, that all the anti virus stuff still keeps tabs on you and reports this information to someone or something.

any help in this would be appreciated

thanks chris

We've tried Spybot before, it did work, but it froze the computer solid the first time and a second run through crashed the computer for several weeks until Shoveler found enough pieces to make the dinosaur run again.  The second time we used it was with one of works salesmen and remote assistance.  It froze the computer up solid the first time run through and the second run through it seemed to work.  Now we're back where we started - almost.  There are websites adding themselves to our favorites list, and we have a new home page no matter what we do to get rid of the stuff.  I know I got rid of some of it at one time in the registry, but I really don't like deleting things from there.  I'm thinking a very large hammer would help!!!

Zone Alarm is good because you can select exactly which programs you do and don't want to be able to run...and the spyware crapola I believe are programs....so you just go to the option "program control" and go through the list of programs and have the choice to deny, ask or allow....if I don't know what the program is i choose ask...if I know its a bad boy (e.g. gator), I choose deny and then it looses it ability to work.  There was some trial and error because you have to get to know which programs really are the spyware (they are good at naming their stuff similar to the real stuff)...however, when you get a "nope..can't use this program" message, etc. you know you have to go back and allow it.

Kind of a long way around to deal with it but it worked for me after I had gotten buried in spyware.

I use Spybot also, and Microsofts Beta spyware removal like Buttlint mentioned.  That program works nice.

Chris has put the security level to the max.  Now you have to click yes' or nos until the screen you want appears.  I've also learned that you have to allow active x controls to work in this site, if not the lengthy post you type just fades quickly from site.
