anybody have good program that will keep the spies out of my computer . seems like every now an then i manage to find some of that stuff hiding in my computer. not sure what it actually is called. i think some of the more computer savvy folks remove it manually and i would opt for this if i knew how. im a little leary of installing new software...im led to beleive but could be wrong, that all the anti virus stuff still keeps tabs on you and reports this information to someone or something. any help in this would be appreciated thanks chris

Get a good program like Norton, they have aniti-virus, firewall, the works. I run a little program called Spybot Search and Destroy. It works pretty well in removing stuff that shouldn't be there. It was free too. No problems with the spyware deal either. Zone Alarm is a good free firewall.

I use four of them. Was trying out various free ones: Spybot, Ad-aware and one that my IP provides. Also bought Xoffspy, since it was supposed to delete something that I couldn't get rid of. Also run Norton antivirus and a hardware firewall. I don't think there is one spyware/adware knockout application yet. I just ran Spybot and it picked up two tracking cookies, then ran the no frills one from the IP and it snagged 3 more, and finally Ad-aware which nailed 5 critical items. Just for fun ran XoftSpy and there was nothing left for it to find. If I had run it first I would've found some of the other ones. The immunizer in SpyBot seems to keep the nasties out of the new computer. But the old one, she done picked up a piece of spyware that I've deleted all the programs that came with it, but nothing will clean it out of the registry. Can't even manually delete the registry entry. Maybe go into safe mode and screw up the machine from there. A left over from my son's days of Kazaa and other peer to peer crud downloading before I installed anti-spy programs.

Sherri Zone Alarm is good because you can select exactly which programs you do and don't want to be able to run...and the spyware crapola I believe are programs....so you just go to the option "program control" and go through the list of programs and have the choice to deny, ask or allow....if I don't know what the program is i choose ask...if I know its a bad boy (e.g. gator), I choose deny and then it looses it ability to work. There was some trial and error because you have to get to know which programs really are the spyware (they are good at naming their stuff similar to the real stuff)...however, when you get a "nope..can't use this program" message, etc. you know you have to go back and allow it. Kind of a long way around to deal with it but it worked for me after I had gotten buried in spyware. Paula
