The folks who live behind us raise alpacas...so I can stand on my deck and look at the beasties whenever I want.

Hi AZ. Nice pic. I think alpacas are related to the llama family. Nice fur. What do they raise them for? Kevin
As far as I know, they raise them only for the fur, and of course to breed them. It's supposed to be the stuff very expensive sweaters are made of. The herd is always changing, but right now they have about 8 yearling/adult females and four males that I know of, plus two babies. This pic is about two years old, but the female in the foreground is still here. I call her the "old lady".

Do you kill them for their fur, or is it like a sheep and you shave them?? They get shaved in April/May. Have to get rid of those heavy winter coats before it gets too warm.

Isee. What does a shaved one bring to the table monetarily speaking?? I'm sorry Bill, but I don't know the answer to that. I'm not that friendly with the neighbors that I feel comfortable asking.

They can bring a load of dough for the right genetics:
Over President's Day Weekend 2005, a World Record was set for the highest selling Alpaca. In Phoenix, Arizona two farms partnered to purchase a 3/4 Peruvian, 1/4 Chilean white herd sire, Snowmass Invincible. The record setting price was $580,000!
Of particular interest, the average selling price of the 52 lots was $62,600 with the average price for females coming in at $52,000.
