Paula, In that close proximity to an abrasive surface, he can't limit the amount of sharpening action, I'm afraid. The natural consequence of moving away from the bricks would be to hit the bricks on the ground below, and that would break his pencil permanently. Not that he'll likely be thinking about that, or anything else for that matter.
