I have a Kirby g4 purchased in 1994 and I use it til this day. I have replaced the beater bar, bags of course and that is it. If you have a Kirby then you know they are easy to push, I taped my daughter riding mine while I clean here: http://youtu.be/PnviK0WSfEs . Even better than its ease of use is how deep it cleans. It creates a suction and lifts the carpet while beating it so I no the air flow goes from bottom to top of the carpet.

There is one vacuum you can convert from an upright to a canister and shampoo in either position. I own a 20 year old Kirby that still works like new. They are heavy because they are made out of metal, but isn't it best to buy once and to buy right? They are so easy to push I let my daughter ride it while I clean, check out the video of it: http://youtu.be/PnviK0WSfEs . If there is a better vacuum I would like to know what.

I recommend a kirby vacuum. I obtained a 15 year old one I got for cheap and it works great, I have had it for 5 years so now it is 20 years old. It is not lightweight but nothing cleans as well as the kirby does. It creates a suction to the carpet and lifts it as while it is beating it so I know it is cleaning from the bottom up. All other vacuums just beat the top of the carpet without lifting the carpet. Even though it is heavy it is easy to push because it is self propelled. I never have to lift it even if I am cleaning high, I just attach the hose. It is so easy to push my daughter can ride it while I clean. I made a video of her riding it while I clean: http://youtu.be/PnviK0WSfEs . I hope this is of some help to you.
