Need Help with Ariens ST1032
Original Message   Oct 14, 2010 8:52 am
My knowledge is limited...I just picked up one of these used...it runs great...but the problem is with the cord recoil...the cord does not recoil all the way back into the asembly.

Is this an easy fix?  I saw on this model the whole recoil assembly comes off easily...can that assembly just be replaced?  If so - where is a good place for a part like that?

Or is there a way to replace a piece of it - like the coil spring inside?  Like i said - not a lot of experience with these...so your help will be great;y appreciated.

Thanks.

Probably just need to wind the spring a bit tighter.

Have a look at these videos

That should give you enough videos to keep you busy all day.

Just make sure you don't let the spring unwind all the way or pop out while you have it apart.

I attempted to tighten the spring tension by disconnecting the cord and winding the wheel counterclockwise as shown in the video....but as I am winding it and before I can get it to the point where it has enough tension to recoil the cord completely...it gets to a point where I can hear the spring release and unwind inside. I don't easily see how to get it apart if I need to get to the srping.

Not too familiar with them.  Does sound like the end of the spring broke off though.  Looking at your pictures, I don't see how it comes apart.  There could be something under the sticker on the outside, or maybe it is just riveted together.

Thanks for your help..maybe someone else who is familiar will come across this...

That "sticker" is actually a plastic piece that I have taken off...from what I see it doesn't hold anything but just fits into a hole.

Some recoils have a screw to retain the assembly to the housing so can be disassembled and repaired.   Parts exploded views for this type often show the internal spring and have a part number so orderable.

Your model is held together by a pressed and bent over sleeve and not meant to be repaired.  I toss them.   Those are generally shown as a complete assembly so no internal parts exploded and no part numbers.

You can double check yours by feeding your engine number to http://www.outdoordistributors.com/Tecumseh/tecumseh_part_lists.html.  You can also get the correct part number for you complete assembly there and google around for prices.  The replacement will just bolt on and work.  You can also go to a local shop and see if they have any old recoils around.  Bring your recoil.

I tossed one yesterday off a 1028.

Picked up a commercial grade Ariens 1028 last night 924104 that was missing its recoil. After poking around for prices I found that there is a repair kit for the pressed in type of retainer for the spring assembly. This is new to me. Getting the old peened over retainer out is ok but getting a new one on might be a problem. The amount lip extension is not much and getting it rolled over to hold the spring assembly on might be a problem. Maybe a steel ball hammer over the end would work. But the price for the repair kit and spring assembly is more than an aftermarket whole recoil assembly. Tecumseh 590789 (replaces 590733)"Rewind Starter $80 Tecumseh 590774 Repair Kit $20 Tecumseh 590709 Pulley & Rewind Spring Ass'y. $18 Tulsaenginewarehouse RECOIL STARTER ASSEMBLY $33 Repair kit listed here: http://www.partstree.com/parts/?lc=tecumseh&mn=RS3-590733&dn=RES18RES_18590733-RS Tulsa part (36-1018) here: http://www.partstree.com/parts/?lc=tecumseh&mn=RS3-590733&dn=RES18RES_18590733-RS
