lawn mower won"t start

I have a craftsman 6.75 horsepower, 22" rotary lawn mowerthat won't start. When i pull the starter rope the flywheel and blade just spin but won't engage. What would cause this? Could it be a bad blade adapter ?

My son was mowing the lawn and he heard somrthing start to gride up so he ran away from the mower. When he tried to start it again it wouldn't. When you pull the starting rope the flywheel and blade just keep spinning like their not making contact with anything else. What could cause there not to be any engagement with the motor?

I guess this is posted twice.. I think a thrown crankshaft rod... If you can take out the plug on most engines the piston top can be seen throught the plug hole. See it the piston is moving when the engine is slowly turned by the blade or pull rope. moving = Good not moving = Bad Drain the oil see if there is any shiny chunks in the oil...
