Auger makes a loud clanking noise
Original Message   Feb 7, 2010 6:55 am
I have a Craftsman 5.5hp dual stage (Model No. 247.883550) snow thrower and when I engage the auger, it makes a loud clanking noise.  It continues to make this noise as long as the auger is engaged.  It is not a belt like squeal, but it sounds more like a metal to metal noise.  The thrower still works fine, but I'm concerned about the noise.  The shear pins look fine, and the blades don't appear to be hitting anything.

Any advice would be appreciated.  thanks

Could be your impeller bearing is shot. Take the belt cover off and grab the lower impeller pulley or the impeller itself and see if there is slop.
