Riding mower dilemma
Original Message   Apr 16, 2008 6:45 pm
Wow this is a great site!  I am in the market for a used riding mower.  I'm looking at a 1998 John Deere LX173 15 hp Kohler with bagger and a Cub Cadet 2135 with a 16 hp vanguard v-twin,hydro,mulching kit and 220 hours.  Both have 38" decks.  The JD is asking 1000, but is willing to take 750 and the Cub is asking 800 and willing to take 650.  Any advice on either one of these units would be much appreciated.  The JD might need the carb cleaned as it sat last year but it has been routinely maintained up until that point.  The cub is supposedly ready to go.  I am no mechanic so any riding mower advice would be a great help.

Thanks,

Chase

The JD is a better machine engine wise.  The vangards that I have worked on or came into the shop I worked at had lots of valve train problems (keeping them set to clearance and the problems after the beat apart)  the Vangard was made for briggs by Mitsubishi (spelling).  I would much rather have a kohler.

Good Luck,
