Ariens older tecumseh 5hp vs newer 5hp are they a direct bolt on?
Original Message   Jan 29, 2007 10:32 am
I have an old ariens 5hp from the 70s that needs a carb and a gas tank, the frame is obviously still good.  I found a good deal on a newer tecumseh 5hp snowblower engine with a 3/4" x 2 5/16 keyed and tapped shaft.  Is this a direct bolt replacement for the older 5hp engine?  Unfortunately I can't look at my machine because it is a few hours away at my cabin up north.  Any help would be appreciated!

Well I missed out on the motor but such is life.. I did find a gas tank for my old motor so now all I need is a carb for it.  Does anyone know if the newer style 640088/640342 carb is the one that will work with this motor?

the older pre emmision carbs are getting harder to find. Check ebay. Do a search for rupp carb. There is a guy fella named Brandt that has a few of them left over from the old days when rupp was using tecumseh motors on their minibikes. These carbs are the real deal, but it will cost you about $65 bucks. All the new emmision carbs are junk in my opinion.

Thanks, the problem as I understand it with those mini bike carbs is that they have a primer button and no choke, which will make it difficult to start the snowblower in the cold.  I might try one of the newer style carbs, I was speaking with a local small engine guy and he said it should work.

Those are NOT the carbs I am talking about. That guy is passing off lawnmower carbs as minibike carbs. Those are emmsion carbs & are good for nothing except lawnmowers. The real minibike carbs are the pre-emmision carbs with no primer ( they have a choke). Like this....
And they are on there, but like I said, they are not cheap ($70).. But I guess you get what you pay for.
