Toro 524 1st stage not spinning - Can I fix it ?
Original Message   Dec 27, 2006 11:22 am
the initial stage snow auger (not the throwing auger - which I'm guessing  is considered the 2nd stage)  but the intial auger that gathers the snow is not spinning when engaged - but the thrower itself is spinning - as is the shaft that goes into the stage 1 gear box.  When not engaged and the engine is off, I cannot turn the 1st stage auger.  Since the shaft is turning at the gear box when the auger is engaged yet the auger itself is not turning, I am guessing either the shaft's gears are stripped or the gears themselves are stripped.  The gear box has grease.  I do not see a shear pin.

I am wondering if this is something I can fix by taking the blower apart - or does it need to go to a dealer ?  And if I can fix it (I fix many things) - do you take the gear box apart first or do you have to remove the auger first ?
