installing Shear pins
Original Message   Jan 1, 2005 8:00 pm
I need to replace the shear pins on my snowblower. The previous owner used hardened bolts. I ordered a few replacements when I placed an order with Jacks Small Engine.

My question is this... The shear pin consisits of a bolt ,nut and a little coller. how do you correctly install this type of pin?

The snow blower is a 1980 yardman snowbird I ordered the pins using the yardman part number but they may be after market.

each pin is a bolt shaped piece a nut and asmall bushing type coller? sort of a spacer . I am just not sure what it is for?

Jgreen- You might not need them. See how the pins fit in the auger shaft first and try and determine if they are necessary. - Kris

I just greased the auger shaft on my unit according to the assembly manual. The manufacturers recommendation is to remove the shear bolts, grease the zerk fittings, spin the auger sections and reinstall the shear bolts. They required 11ft.lbs of torque on the shear bolts. If you over torque the shear bolts when installing them (too tight) they will protect NOTHING!!!

The collar goes on the bolt first, then the bolt goes thru the shaft, then the nut.

Yup!

Mainly, it's a spacer to cover different sizes of shafts. The shear bolts are not always threaded completely.

that makes sense. With out the spacer you wouldnt be able to tighten down the nut on a very narrow shaft.

thanks for the help
