Toro 824 Snowblower Drive and Axle Seized
#1   May 4, 2008 1:44 pm
While doing the annual spring service of my snowblower I found that the back bearing on the drive system was badly worn.  I had never bothered to check this bearing because the drive appeared to be working properly.  The bearing used is the same as the ones used on the axle so while the new bearing is on order I just switched a good axle bearing for a drive bearing and put the works back together.  The axle bearing is easy to replace IF you can get the rim off the axle.  One of my rims was seized on and needed a 50 ton press to get it off.  We had to use the press the entire length of the axle.  This should remind everyone to remove, clean and lubricate the rims/axles at least once a year.  My axles had not been off for a number of years but from now on will be off for every service.
