Toror 421 Frozen Augers

I was using the snowbolwer the other day it was shooting out snow until it hit a section of snow with slush under it which locked up the augers. Checked the belt and it was fine, when I engage the augers the engiine bogs down, any ideas? Should the augers spin freely when turned off and not engaged?
