'98 Sears/Poulan Hydrostatic Trans - Used Mower - Yeah or Neah?
#1   Mar 11, 2007 6:49 am
I'm looking to buy a used mower and found a '98 Poulan 42" with a 14.5 HP oil-filtered Briggs engine.  Seems to be in good shape but I have read about the issues with the Hydro trans.  This mower was used to cut 1.5 acres of grass about 8 months out of the year.  Seems like most slipping issues can be corrected/avoided by changing the oil in the transaxle.

Is this pretty much the case  or should I avoid a used mower with this trans and try to find a traditional unit?  One big questions is whether or not parts are available for this unit.  Some posts have said no but others have talked about replacing individual pieces - are they getting these parts used or can you actually buy new internals for these?  Thanks for your help!
