There are four major dishwashing manufacturers in the United States:
High end — KitchenAid
Low end — Roper, Kenmore
High end — Jenn-Air, Magic Chef
Mid level — Amana
Low end — Admiral
High end — General Electric
Low end — Hotpoint
Frigidaire sells under its own label
European makers include Bosch, Miele and the Fisher & Paykel brand comes from New Zealand.
It can be frustrating to find particular models as the manufacturers change model numbers frequently. They also incorporate features and color codes into those model numbers such as W for White or B for black.
Check on the manufacturer's warranty as well. Typically they go for one year, parts and labor and longer warranties on significant parts such as tub or door. Make sure you know where you can get your machine serviced locally and conveniently. With some European brands your choice of repair service may be slim.
If the major parts of a dishwasher are located near the front, you may be able to repair it yourself, or spend less money for repair time in a service call.
Also note that the old machine will need to be taken out and the new installed. The installer may charge you extra to take the old dishwasher away as well. If you are handy it is not an impossible task to accomplish in a couple of hours. Shop your local hardware store or surf the internet for helpful, detailed instructions.
