lack of info and ?s
03/16/01 at 8:21pm

i have been looking at purchasing a new upright for over a month. i need one right away, but can't seem to get adequate info, so i have had to hold off. i have spoke with sales people, emailed various companies, and went to stores to look for information on the vacuums directly. sales people know nothing, companies have not even acknowleged my request for information. the vacuums and packaging do not provide adequate info.
all i wanted to know for each vaccum was:
motor wattage/rpm
air watts/water suction lift/cpm
filtration type --- what % is put out through the exhaust
the european websites provide much more detailed information about the vacuums they offer (even on brand names sold in the usa). each vacuum brand lists near-useless information that is not uniform, so it makes it near impossible to make accurate comparisons.
with that said, i have a few questions that i hope someone out there may be able to answer.
is there a website (or other contact) where one can access uniform or standardized specs to make comparisons by?
is there any place that i can get above mentioned information for individual vacuum brands (particularly the bissell lift off #3554, panasonic mc-v7400d, sanyo performax u series --- these were the stateside brands recommended to me)?
are there any sebo vacuum dealers in texas?
when the x4 is available, what will the price be.
any help would be greatly appreciated.
thanks.

Try www.comsumerreports.com. Go to vacuums. They did all the foot work for you already, with independent tests.

thank you for the reply and suggestion. i started my search with that website many weeks ago and did not find it very helpful at the time. i went back to the site after reading your reply. i looked over the latest rating/review, and still didn't find the information about the water lift/cpm/air watt measurement or the motor wattage/rpm. this would give me a better idea of suction power and basis for comparison to the vacuums models that listed these measurements. maybe it is listed, but i am not seeing it? could you tell me where on the site the information is listed? i looked at model specs, ratings, and "how we test."
thank you.

H2o & CFM Ratings

Unfortunately, most of the American vacuums do not list these ratings.
There are only two that I know of that publish the rating of their machines, Kirby (109 CFM on low speed / 84.5 CFM on hi speed) and Air-Way Sanitizer (100 H2o / 100 CFM). There may be a couple others like Air-Storm. Most of the USA manufacturers don't want you to know their ratings because they're pathetic. The most important factor is the CFM rating. Air flow is what cleans, not sealed suction. Amps or wattage is less important except to let you know how efficient a machine is. Just because the machine draws 12 amps, does not mean it's powerful. An example is the Miele S658 that draws just 10 amps and delivers over 140 CFM of air flow. I've owned alot of machines and this one is the most powerful and quietest off them all.

You can check out these independant ratings at http://www.vacman.com.
I know alot of people have bashed him & his site. His way of communicating the truth I think insults many people. (The truth hurts).
His web site is not the best for viewing but does have accurate H2o & CFM ratings, along with life of the motor, on most USA machines under the comparison heading.

Another good informational site is http://ristenbatt.com. His site has very useful information on many good machines. I purchased the Miele S658 from them and they are very professional to deal with.

thank you for the reply. i agree with everything you said. i had considered another kirby (had one years ago) but didn't want to spend another couple of thousands dollars on one (loved the one i had, but was cumbersome to use). i have seen both the sites you suggested and agree that those two provide the best information of any i've come across (involving brands sold in the us market). i had been leaning towards trying a sebo for months, but the X4 wasn't offered so i rested that option. now that i have heard it will be available in the states, i am looking to find a dealer near dallas, vegas, or atlanta (i would like to look one over first hand, if possible). do you happen to know how i might be able to find more information about this model? just to put another option to rest --- do you happen to know specs or performance information on the panasonic MC-V7407D?
thanks

Sebo & Panisonic

Being that I've never cared for uprights because they are not versatile and powerful enough for my purposes, about the only upright I'd recommend is the SEBO X-1. I'm saying this because of the fact you will get better cleaning performance with the smaller brush/roller. The width is less that the X-2, therfore there is more suction and airflow. The CFM is somewhere around 89 I believe. Together with the design of the roller, you will get excellent performance. The dust bags are one of the only that don't leak visible dust in the bag chamber. I realize that you probably don't care for canisters but they do perform and last the longest.

The Panisonic you refer to has it's ratings listed at Vacdepot in Texas. The url is listed below and has detailed information of the machine other than H2o and CFM. Good luck.
