It's worth every dime, and then some, how many vacuums do you think you'll buy in 30 years? how many times will you kill your carpet, by steam cleaning it? how many times will you call a plumber about a clogged drain? How many dust mites are in your bed? Do you deep clean your mattress? How much money do you spend dry cleaning your drapes? How much dirt do you have deep down in your carpet, that you will never get out, with a store bought vacuum? wouldn't you like to live healthier in your own home? how much is the price of your health? If you don't have a Kirby you are living in pure filth face first.

I doubt seriously that the Kirby is really worth it.  We owned an old Hoover (industrial style) for 40 years that worked wonderfully.  It just recently gave out and I'm trying to figure out what to replace it with. If I remember correctly consumer reports rated Kirby as good but not worth the price.  If you want a vac that you'll own for 30 years, go for an industrial model of Hoover or Eureka.   As for the prior post stating that if you don't own a Kirby you're living in filth face down...are you really going to clean all those things she mentioned and furthermore, humankind has lived with "filth" and survived quite well since time immemorial.  A little dirt will hurt you a lot less than pesticides, processed foods and salt.
