So after having the Hoover for six weeks and pitting it against another vacuum, I am less impressed. The lightweight nature and the ease of use of the Hoover is phenomenal but its use on bare floors is really non-existent. I spilled some sugar on the hardwoods during a party last week and tried to sweep it up with the upright BIG MISTAKE. Scatter city! Also, recently I obtained a vacuum in a contest and put it against the Hoover to which it just couldn't compare. The amount of dirt, hair, and debris left in the carpet after the Hoover was embarassing. For a lightweight and if you have newer carpets, still a fine choice but I wouldn't spend so much money on a vacuum with such limitations. Sadly, I'll be returning the Hoover tomorrow.

First my history with vacuums, so back in November, I took the plunge of abandoning my Dyson DC21 which I had had since its introduction. Before that I had a Dyson DC07 Animal which was doing ok but was not good for all the mixed flooring we had in the house. The Dyson Animal was relegated to use by my mother and I used the DC21 for well over 2 years. Just recently I had noticed a drop in suction and just lousy performance overall by the brush head on the DC21 so I took it to the shop for a tune up and was told to go with another vac if i wanted longevity. So the DC21 hit ebay and I purchased a cheap GE canister at Wal-Mart. The cann was great until the handle snapped off last week. Back to the store I went, enter the Hoover Platinum.

I purchased the Platinum after reading some info online here about the release. I have used it for little over a week and am really mixed on the results. For a $400 vac it does leave some things to be desired. We have a lot of heavy area rugs in our house accompanied by tile, wood floors, and wall to wall frieze in the bedrooms and basement. It does well at picking up ALL the dog hair off the rugs as well as sweeping into corners of the moulding around the floors. It also grooms the pile very well. On the low setting it does well on the frieze and shows no signs of fraying or dethreading. It uses a cloth HEPA bag which is huge and shows no signs of bad emissions. It does however show every speck of dog hair and dust on the body of the vacuum due to the high gloss black. Build quality is ok, not great, the handle seems a little flimsy and the wheels are like something off a plastic Tonka truck. Although, they show no signs of scratching the hardwoods. The brushroll cannot be turned off and the height adjustment is automatic. The cord is a generouse 35 feet. The canister is quite handy albeit QUITE noisy. The hose reaches about 5 feet which with the attachments is pretty short. You will want to use the strap or carrying handle while vacuuming as putting it on the floor is not an option with the hose. Suction is powerful and the dusting brush and crevice tool are well built. The floor tool is VERY AGRESSIVE and stiff, too stiff to groom the frieze carpet with. Overall, its a keeper but if there is a later iteration, Hoover/TTI has some improvements to make. For cleanability and pure power I give it a 4, but we'll see how it holds up.

Date Purchased: 01/30/2009
Price Paid: $399
Recommend: No
Pros:
Great suction, great grooming power, leaves carpets looking great, lint and hair free. Canister is handy with pure suction power. Both are very lightweight. Uses HEPA cloth bags in both units for superior filtration. 6 year warranty. Low/High setting.

Cons:
No on/off brushroll. LOUD! Direct air so careful of those screws, coins, and rocks. Too powerful for small area rugs, build quality seems flimsy. Hose too short on canister. Proprietary bags which are expensive and not easy to find... YET.
