Sebo X1 Automatic

After a myriad of disasters, (a couple of Hoovers, a lousy and noisy clogged Oreck XL, three Dyson models and an Electrolux upright) a family member gave us his cherished Sebo X1 Automatic upright. Briefly we've had it since 1996 and has never been back to Sebo although the company is German, their customer service in the UK is excellent and always on hand to help.

The X1 Automatic has to be the easiest and lightest upright I have ever used. Forget lifting it when you can buy an additional 6 metre extension hose to use at the back of the top grab hoister wand and permanent hose before tackling stairs. The X1 has a microchip on board which like the internal toothed drive belt, will never need to be tampered with. This means the X1 will sense the floor height of any covering and adjust the floor head so that the bristles will meet the covering. This doesn't mean that thr bristles will just thump down on a carpet leaving a trail of markings; the X1 compensates the wear of the brush bristles which makes for an equally lightweight gliding ability whilst ensuring pick up despite a full 5.3 litre dust bag which fills from the top to the bottom with acres of suction still left.

If you are looking for a compact upright which won't get stuck between the legs of chairs at your dinner table, or wish for an upright which sticks to a floor even when it is made to go flat to the floor, the Sebo X1 Automatic may shock you as it does all this without causing stress to the owner.

Bags and filters are easy to buy outlasting most of their rivals both on spec (HEPA/S Class) whilst the bag itself comes with sealing caps which seal the dirt in. I'm past the days of cyclonic vacuum cleaners; fed up with declogging filters on non Dyson machines and fed up paying out for costly repairs. When Dyson still has a bad reputation for faults according to Which?UK Consumer magazine it's no wonder that Sebo is number one. Whilst Miele have some models which are endorsed by the Britsh Allergy Foundation, ALL Sebo vacuums meet this requirement.

For an easy life, not worrying about showing off your dirt to friends and for a quick and speedy clean coupled with a long 10 metre power cord with optional soft brushes suitable for precious Marble, wood flooring no wonder the Sebo X1 is a good all rounder. Replaced now by the X1.1, X4 and X5 "big foot," its no wonder that people are still buying one of Germany's best kept secrets.

Date Purchased: 1996
Price Paid: $300
Recommend: Yes
Pros:
Microchip sensor head adjusts to all carpet and flooring widths, powerful but not emission cutting motors, reasonably quiet, great bag capacity with seal caps, choice of floor brush rollers (no beaters), lifetime drive belt sealed from inspection, easy to remove brush bar, S Class/HEPA filters last 20 bags, simple ease of use and excellent light gliding.

Cons:
Short hose. The X1 is no longer in production but has been replaced by X1.1 and X4. Windsor-Sebo models in the U.S far too expensive.
