This is the best Miele yet, the bags will leak some fine dust but all bags leak that is how they work, if a bag was sealed it would not allow air through it, this is why Miele puts 2 filters after the bag and they are all sealed so no leakage past hepa filter, the nice thing about all filtrete is it never clogs up like old paper bags

update on S5 - watch out for bag leakage

The same as before, but with the provisio that two samples of the S5 (see forum S5 topic for full details) showed dust leakage through the G-series filtrette bags Miele uses. In one case this leakage prematurely clogged the HEPA filter.

Miele chose G series bags for the S5, but forced them into a smaller bag cavity so their capacity was reduced by about a quart.

Be sure to check out any sample of the S5 you try out to see if this problem is happening (in sample I saw, the bags leaked dust from the very bottom). This can cause premature HEPA filter clogging, and the HEPA filters are expensive.

You can probably avoid the problem with frequent bag changes, but this makes the S5 very expensive to own.

The Miele S-5 is a worthwhile refinement over the current 500-600 Miele series, and is perhaps the quietest, best performing bagged cannister vac on the market today. The vac case was a pewter/silver color, similar in texture to other Metallic finish Mieles. The Vortex motors' Suction/Airflow is very good to excellent and similar to current Mieles. Unlike the S-4 series, the S-5 has an AC powered hose allowing use of the previous 217 and 236 powerbrushes. The hose is similar to other Mieles, sturdy and easy to hande thanks to light weight. Miele's wand now has a true handle as well as a swivel/rotating collar for the hose to help minimize kinks. Setting wand heigth is a little more clumsy than before as the heigth button is on the side of the wand facing the floor. The lack of a swivel at the tank and a tri-castor setup means the vacuum can tip and drag in some cases. The vac bags are the standard Miele Filtrette type, but in sample I tried, the bag (nowhere near full) had visible dust working through its exterior - this could make for overly frequent replacement of the effective but costly HEPA filter. Some plastic bits felt a little flimsy given the high price, but there was no sharp edges/flashing or other signs of poor workmanship.

Nits aside, the S-5 is definitely worthwhile to check out if you need a really quiet machine with excellept performance.

Pros:
extremely quiet operation
all air exhausted straight up - no dust moving drafts
Uses previous Miele power brushes (AC powered hose)
wand has handle and hose swivels to prevent kinking
ample suction power via Miele's vortex motor
HEPA filtration
Full controls on handle with easy-view LED's.
Filtrette bags perform well, but see below.

Cons:
cramped bag compartment
some plastic pieces a bit creaky
no hose swivel at tank end
tri-castor design prone to tipping in tight manuevers
expensive, like all Mieles.
Filtrette bags can leak small amounts of dust in some cases.
Wand heigth harder to adjust than previous designs.
