My Kenmore can is about to die!
#1   Jul 26, 2008 6:23 pm
Hello

I don't frequent this forum very much. I bought the kenmore can red pepper canister 2 yrs ago, well almost 2 yrs ago. Prior to that I had one for two years, then I bought a Rainbow and gave that one to my DAD which lasted him another year before he said it caught on fire with him using it. I don't know how well he maintained it though. Anyway, I wished I had kept it because I hated getting the Rainbow out to vacuum everyday because I have two cats and try to vacuum everyday. So thats why I ended up buying another one. Because I LOVE how user friendly and effective they are. I take care of them, change the bags frequently (micro-lined) and filters. But my issue isn't a motor problem. One thing, where the power head cord makes the bend as it starts to go up the lower wand is starting to fray. Also the 360 degree swivel hose when it swivels, it is losing contact with power so it now goes on and off when I'm trying to vacuum. Keep this in mind. When I first bought it ALMOST 2 yrs ago, during the 30 day warranty, the on/off button on the handle malfunctioned and the vacuum stayed on unless you plug/unplug it. I took it to get it fixed for FREE. It has worked flawlessly for almost 2 yrs. IT has been used Heavily though. I would venture to say at least 5 days a week. 1300 sq ft one story home. So with the heavy use, is this justifiable? I'm wondering, had I bought the extended warranty since I use it so heavily instead of having to buy a brand new vac, I could have just taken this to get it fixed. But Would they have fixed it? I LOVE these vacs, I wish they were more durable. I didn't abuse it at all. I just used it ALOT! I still use the Rainbow and wouldn't give it up. But I only use it for MAJOR cleaning.

Thanks for the input. The Kenmore can has got to be the most user friendly/easy to use vac for me anyway. I vacuum every single day, I have 2 cats plus I'm just a clean freak in general. I'm paranoid about the Kenmore as much as I like it, It just feels cheap. I'm waiting for the connected from the wand to the carpet power brush to give due to stress, so far this has not happened but I have read complaints about this. I had a Kenmore can I used for 2 years, gave it to my dad, it caught on fire. Now, who's to say that he changed the bags and the filters, I don't know. But yeah, he said it caught on fire while he was vacuuming. I was wondering about getting an old rebuilt lux tank canister and just using a cloth hepa bag with that. But then again, the Lux's aren't as easy to use as Kenmore Im guessing no quick release wand. I do like the Simplicity and Riccar. I'm willing to put money into something like that if it will last. I take care of all my things so I'm pretty good about up keep, bags filters etc.
Someone help me with questions about sealed/non sealed canisters

I have a Kenmore Can. From what I've read, it isn't sealed suction. Wonder why Kenmore chooses not to do this to their can's? Does the hepa bag make up for it If it isn't sealed, the air doesn't all exit out the hepa filter, right? Do the Electrolux metal can's have sealed suction? If you use a hepa cloth bag in a non sealed canister like an old metal lux can, would that keep down emissions? I'm looking for a canister, that is as easy to use as Kenmore cans but more reliable. I can't seem to find prices on Riccar or Simplicity online. I'm afraid anything I'm asking for here is gonna run into the 800 dollar and up range. I definitely don't want an upright or bagless. The Kenmores are sooo easy to use I just wish they were more reliable.

Well....I've been curious to see what the hepa looks like anyway and I've looked at it closely...it still looks and smells very clean.. I've has this rainbow 1 yr and 3 mos..I have used it atleast 30 times..My house is wall to wall berber and tile in bathrooms 1300 sq feet home. Granted I change the water every 20 minutes..I may go a tad longer but the water has been at worst dark mop water...,mostly just cloudy with cat hair in it...I'm telling ya....I can tell a difference in how long the house stays clean..I'm a neat freak and a clean freak...If I use the regular Kenmore..It does a good job...But I'm trying to figure out if this water is not filtering the dirt like some say and it's bouncing off the water wouldn't the hepa be NASTY???? I mean it's a sealed system..all the air comes straight out of that hepa.
