Hoover S3670 canister . . .
Original Message   Jul 28, 2008 5:51 pm
Hi,

Stopped at the Hoover Company website to look for the new upright MH mentioned.  Didn't find it but I was pleasantly surprised to discover that Hoover's made a serious attempt at a canister vacuum.  So serious in fact it seems to have borrowed a few things already done by Miele but what's wrong with that?  Nice thing is that the price on the website is only $299 and the machine comes with a three-year warranty.  It uses the Wind Tunnel power nozzle (Mole will probably know this nozzle's  repair record and efficiency). It might be the answer for some of the folks looking for a canister under the $400 mark.

I've included the following link to allow interested parties to browse the cleaner's user guide -- http://www.hoover.com/pdfs/manuals/S3670.pdf

Best,

Venson

Hi Venson,

WOW what a deal this is,looks like a miele 500 series canister with a hoover quadraflex powerhead, with a mutated elbow, this might be the best vacuum for the money on the planet.

I might even want to sell hoover again........................................................

Geez, I'd almost put money on that being made by Tacony.  Sure looks like a Riccar Pristine to me.

Hi Venson:

This is one of 6 HOOVER Centennial Anniversary vacuum editions.  Latest count is 4 uprights and 2 canisters.  Originally, I thought there were 3 anniversary editions.  Then I thought there were 5.  Nothing special.  Just the HOOVER traditionals [pre-TTI takeover] with some extra finishes added .  Now number 6, a totally new looking canister.  Looks like a winner regardless of the maker.

I haven't seen these in any of the big box stores yet.  I suspect they will come after the Labor Day and back to school sales.  By the time the Christmas Holiday sales season starts.

It appears after one year, that TTI and HOOVER have a mutually agreeable and profitable relationship based on the product mix and prices.

Hi Dusty,

You may be right.  Link to the Pristine manual is here --- http://www.riccar.com/ftp/whitepapers/Pristine_OwnersManual_3.07.pdf

The all swivel caster set-up is similar.  The hose connection is slightly different and Riccar offers a fancier three-in-one tool.  Do you know the difference in price?

Hiya Mole,

I'm most impressed with the three-year warranty.  I'd sure give on a go if I needed another vacuum right now.  Can you give us the skinny on the power nozzle?

Hi Carmine,

Do you think the price, certainly reasonable, is the makers way of mking friends for this machine?  Except for the lack of a doo-dad or two it is very similar to my Miele S5890 and think, though not sure, it employs filtrete style bags.  At $299, I'd think, yes, it's got to be a winner.

Wands and the quick release on the powerhead are similar to Riccar as well.  Biggest difference seems to be the use of the Dirt Devil hand grip on the hose and of course the windtunnel powerhead.  HEPA filter seems to be the same as the Pristine as well.  There would be quite a price difference between this and the Riccar all though the latter offers a 7 year motor warranty and what I would consider a better quality powerhead.

Hi again Dusty,

Point well noted.  CR did test the WindTunnel bagless canister which has a similarly designed WindTunnel power nozzle.  It rated above average for carpet cleaning and good at at getting up pet hair against higher scores by other machine in that area.  Yet, I would think the S3670 would suffice for a lot of folks.  Miele, for instance, has never been rated for raising Cain when it comes to carpet cleaning but I find mine to be just what the doctor ordered.

The Kenmore Progressive I was using has a power nozzle very similar to Riccar's but between the Miele and the Kenmore I have yet to find enough difference for significant issue.  They both perform well.

Yo Venson,

The powernozzle is most defenatly a Hoover  Quadraflex System, super aggresive set up, hope its a lot quieter than previous models, it will absolutly clean and groom in typical hoover fashion. The durability factor will come into play [not very rugged] if they got the harmonics taken care of it should not rattle itself apart in a years time,

It looks like MIELE ,TTI, TACONY, BOSCH , had a little get together and morphed into a vacuum cleaner, i must say they have some nice looking children,

On A side note, the talk in the industry is that this was going to happen about 3 or 4 years ago,all the companies joined together and all the machines look like little clones of each other, it has come to fruitation after seeing this HOOVER offering,

The only hold out is AERUS/ELECTROLUX, still a tank style, the only one left,[royal and airways tanks are gone],

Hi Venson:

Always the vacuum idealist of yore, my hopes and desires are that the HOOVER TTI canns, at this price/higher [with some doo dads added] and 3 year warranty, will be for the indy stores and not the big box stores venues.  For budget conscious vacuum buyers, peeved by the low-high priced junk vacuums in all the big box stores, who are not quite ready to spring for $500 plus brands [the baby boomers], this would be a likely choice.

Questions based on MOLE's response about the HOOVER power nozzle [quadraflex]:  Is it a metal agitator?  Is this the same one that HOOVER uses on the Dimension CV?

No Carmine, the brush roll is very similar the W.T. upright ,not the same one we were use to, No more brushes to change, core is high impact plastic, but the agitator bearings are the same,[nylon shield] oh boy i can still use my bearing repacking gun,the one we got from HOOVER in the 60's,

Remember the deluxe powerhead with the elbow that swiveled, I dont know how they got away with calling this the quiet series machines.

The Hoover Cans are on back order....Insiders say it's really a problem that they are trying to address. Better now before they hit the market I guess.

The S3670 has been on the website for about 3wks now.  There is nothing new about this machine.  This HOOVER does use a HOOVER power nozzle that is not available on the original.  The original is a European Dirt Devil(owned by TTI).  The S3670 will use the clothlike HEPA bags.  It will not be as good as the Riccar/Simplicity, but is an improvement over the HOOVER Windtunnel canisters of the past.

Give the model some time, it will be avail. in more places.  It just came out.

Nice to have a HOOVER fan on here.  Can you tell me where the new HOOVER canister is made?  I tried to download the users manual to see, but it didn't work.

Is the new HOOVER Diamond Line in 2009 for a particular retailer?

Thanks.

Hi Carmine,

Sorry to hear the address didn't work.  Did you try highlighting the address onscreen by dragging you cursor across it as you hold down the left mouse button and then copying and pasting it into the URL window of your browser?  In any event, you can go directly to www.hoover.com and find the S3670 at the website.  Once you click on S3670's feature page you'll find a link to the user guide PDF there.

Best,

Venson

Hi MOLE:

Yes, the infamous HOOVER grease gun.  It did a wonderful job packing grease into the agitator bearings.  HOOVER went to the nylon shield to avoid the white felt grease washers.  I liked the white felt washers better.  For a quick and dirty fix on a noisy bearing, just drop some oil on the felt washers and let it soak into the bearing.  Not as good as pulling the bearings, cleaning and repacking with grease, but a quick fix.

I had the HOOVER cloth bag cleaner and motor cleaner too.  Sold all the repair tools and equipment with the business.

The box says made in china asm'd in Mexico guess no more Canton..OH... The Diamond Line the Service guy was talking about is to be a "premium" line. He mentioned some fancy "SteamVac" with computer controlled electronics dry sensors... I told him I was in the market for a good steamvac in the near future. I am supposing it is going to be like their aniversery models, only with some real significant changes. BTW I still love the S3670.. Love the casters, the hose, the power nozz "quick disconnect".. nice n quite, and it has a bright red light that tells me I sucked up another one of my son's toys..oops..

Carmine,

Thanks for the welcome BTW!! I do love Hoover's!  I had a Self proppelled upright that I bought in 1999, I had a couple of problems with it, a switch recall, some arm thing for the self propelled once and of course the yearly flat belt change. But you know I make about $15 an hour and support 3 people on that. I don't own hand knotted silk infused oriental rugs or have shag carpet or have dinner parties where I exhibit my fruity designer vac and have people stroke me over it , so the 279$ (now 199.99 Grrr.) I paid for it back then just as the $299.99 is an absolute crap load of money to me, this canister has a 3 year warranty, my old bagged self propelled had a 1 year warranty, I still have it and it runs great.. I probably would not have even looked for a new vac had I not moved into a rental with a good bit of wood floors. I bet you guys the indy vac shop owners would carry the Hoover brand and here I go to light the fuse.. if you could make money off them..  Shame on Hoover, Maytag, Whirlpool or TTI or who ever the hell owns Hoover for the next 10 minutes now for not helping you guys the mom and pops the "Real" America... I HATE the big box stores.. I would have bought it from an indy store but not a friggin single vac shop in 60 miles (that's as far as I checked) carries Hoover except for the guys at the Hoover Service Center (great service BTW)..Thank you Lord Jesus Hoover still has these shops around.. I JUST WISH THEY WERE MADE IN THE USA!! But if they were I guess we wouldn't have Hoover around anymore or I'd be paying twice what I spent.. I hope my money goes to help out a family like mine in some other developing country have a good meal, a smile and a new toy for the kiddies... That's gotta be the silver lining... Anyway GOD BLESS AMERICA.. Let's try to hold on to what we have...

HOOVERGROOVER:

Thanks for the info.

I don't think I have the words to properly say this but here goes.  I can't think of any American industry in the last one hundred years that was invented, defined and framed so much by one single brand as vacuums and HOOVER!  May they both live forever and prosper.

WRT HOOVER, indies and big box stores and vacuum brands, I'll message you privately.   It's a subject near and dear to my heart.

Hoovergroover, did you know you have a Dirt Devil?  This canister is sold in Europe as the Allegra model M7000.  Very nice machine, however, you mention that the Hoover store gave you some bags.  Just wondering if those 3 bags have a picture of the round Hoover Constellation on the front of the package.  If it does, those are not the right bags for your machine.  The correct bags have all of the writing on the bag in blue printing and have a picture of YOUR vacuum (the Dirt Devil Allegra) on the front cover.  While the bags do claim to be Type S bags (like the Constellation), they are different from the Constellation bags.  The bags for the Dirt Devil Allegra (oops, I mean Hoover Windtunnel) actually have a large piece of plastic in the bottom of the bag to deflect the airstream, keeping the dirt from penetrating the bag (like a Miele bag is designed).  In the Constellation, the motor is directly under this portion where the plastic would be; the machine would not be able to work correctly with the WindTunnel S bag in place as the air is drawn downward, and the motor would likely burn up.  They ARE two separate bags even though both are S bags and they look alike.

One of my friends bought one the day they came out.  He likes it but complains about the lack of a swivel power nozzle connection constantly.  Very difficult to use and doesn't steer at all, hindering its ability to be used under beds and such.

Enjoy your Dirt Devil Hoover!

That is just HOOVER.  They will not be cheaper than other retail dealers, selling the Anniversary Windtunnel.  Others are selling w/an average price of $299.99(or less).

The 24 pounds is quoted as being the cleaners "working weight".   I don't thnk the canister itself weighs that much.

Hi Mike,

I am aware of the $299.99 general price.  What I am making note of is that Hoover itself started this vacuum out at $299.95 at the Hoover site. Shall we expect the price to be upped to $400 by the end of the week?  I am accustomed to seeing the reverse.

Namely, a vacuum started out at a higher than usual  price that eventually comes down either a lot or a little.

As an instance, the Hoover Z started out nose-bleed high pricewise and finally ended up on Home Depot's shelves for fifty bucks a pop.

Best.

Venson

PS -- Forgot something.   If Hoover, intending to escalate the price, had stated the $300 as its "introductory price," the rise to $315 would be easy to understand.  They did not.

Since MOTOR brought up the HOOVER DIRT DEVIL connection through TTI, I took the liberty to post some TTI data which I excerpted from the TTI Web Site.  I highlighted some significant factoids in bold print.  Enjoy reading.  Of particular interest are the facts that the DIRT DEVIL Handcleaner, once the Old Royal metal, is considered its signature product after 100 plus years of operations and the DIRT DEVIL brand has a 98 percent name recognition.

Well... We just got our shipment of the new Hoover S3670's and briefly...

I'm fairly impressed

It's a lot bigger than I thought and I see more resemblance to Simplicity than Miele.
The wand is VERY much like the Simplicity as are the tools. It also has the same feel moving it around.

The plastic is MUCH better than the previous can (but still not top of the line).

I think Hoover UNDER PRICED it. I know the discounters will ruin it but I think it's a $400 plus can. So at the $325-$350 it's a winner. (Longevity and quality issues may change that)

One thing I didn't like was the neck of the PH which seemed cheaply made and I think might become the Achilles Heel. (Just My Opinion) and there is no release peddle.

The PH has that aggressive Hoover kick to it and when I plugged it in it was accidently turned on and scooted across the floor.

It has a lightweight Hepa Filter and I don't know if it is sold as a sealed system

Fit & Finnish give the impression (at least) of quality product both visually and tactile.

Hi Lucky1:

Please post a review of the new HOOVER cann on the Reviews section here.  Nice to see an indy impressed by the new HOOVER-TTI cann.  Speaks well of the new direction that HOOVER is taking so soon after the Spring 2007 takeover by TTI.  Already 2 vacuum products have emerged that are noteworthy.  With information by several posters here of more of the same to come soon.

Keep us posted on the sales and the customers reactions, please.
