Question about a Tecumeseh electric starter
Original Message   Jan 31, 2013 7:50 am
What would it take, or is it even possible, to convert a 33329C 8 HP starter into a 33328C 7HP starter?

Thanks.

There is an armature change but it's probably not length. There is a body part difference but that may be nothing,. As long as it bolts on give it a try. Give it a very short button press. The worst that could happen is it hits the flywheel and that won't damage it or the flywheel. Measure the rear screw to extended armature length as a check. If they match then bolt it on. If you're reluctant to do that you could swap armatures which should fit. The gear end uses the same parts as does the brush section.

Do you know what the real difference is between them?  I've swapped starters between 7, 8 & 10 HP Tecumsehs and have not found any real issue so far.  About the only real difference I've seen is the type of starter button (gray plastic with unshrouded plugin vs black plastic with shrouded plug), the length of the cord between the starter and starter button; and whether the 2 top mounting holes are slotted or not.  Obviously the tooth count on the gear needs to be correct.

If the wire between the starter and starter button turns out to be too short, here's what I've done before to mount the starter button in an alternate locations (towards the bottom):
