Solara buys a toro and ends up w/ an Ariens 11528le for $500.25
Original Message   Jan 22, 2005 9:59 pm
i decided to go to HD to see what hey had left.  That was last night. They had 1 toro 8hp for 750, unassembled. I paid for it. Hd to assemble it that night or next morning.

I put sold sticker on Box. (Hd would not honor a 10% coupon that I had bought on ebay-too ld.)  (Also decided  that i did not like he control setup on the older toro 826 that i had bought. that is now on Craig's List)

Next morning i wake up call HD. No one Knows anything. HD to call me back. It does not. W and I go there.

As feared they sold my bought and paid for toro. W gets Manager   W apoplectic.

He first tries to get me into the ariens 8526le. i said no. i wanted the toro. he then offers the 11528le (that had sold for 1299 and was on sale for 979)for $750.

I really wanted the toro and he could see that. I also knew and told him how heavy and unwieldly the 11528le is(based upon a thread herein)  Finally he said what can he do. I said take 250$ off of the 750 price i had paid and give me the 11528le.  Manager finally agreed. ( i should have asked for more!) so $500.25 out the door.

so now I am a new owner of a new Ariens. at 38.5% of list

HD was not charging anyone the set up fee. and that is fair since what they do is not set up.   Multiple pieces were not correctly instaled

******questions*****

I did the 15 minute breakin , etc.

Does anyone pull he recoil starter and /.or run the starter BEFORE shutting OFF the machine??? (as directed to by the manual?)

Nice score is an understatement! New two stage Ariens with11.5hp for 5 yards is probably the lowest price paid by a consumer in the country!!!!

Before changing the engines on my machines to the B&S Inteks, I would ALWAYS pull the starter rope a couple of times (while the engine was idling) before shutting down.  Especially the older Briggs engines.  They had a tendancy to ice up around the fly wheel and you could not pull the rope.  The Tecumseh engines would do that on occasion, but NOT as bad as the Briggs engines.  After running  they would be hot and melting snow.  While in the truck and driving to the next driveway, they would get cold and freeze up.  Puts a machine out of commision real fast.

You should do it.  It is a real preventative measure if you leave your machine outside or in an unheated garage or shed.  I have seen people break their rope trying to pull  start the machine.

Amazing story! What a score! And what a sweat deal! You are lucky, very lucky. 11.5HP? No one can get any snowblower with 11.5HP engine on it for less than $900 smakarous. Awsome dealing you did with them. I bet you next time, you won't ever buy from them again!

Great buy. The 11528 was on sale today at our local HD for the $979 you mentioned. Regarding "Does anyone pull he recoil starter and /.or run the starter BEFORE shutting OFF the machine??? (as directed to by the manual?)". I haven't been doing that because mine is kept in an above freezing garage. If I kept it outside I'd probably do it particularly if there was alot of snow blown back on the motor.

thanx. i will follow the manual and pull the chord before stopping. just dounds counterintuitive, esp when the manual says that he blood curdingly sound does not effect the engine.

Tomorrow w/ 24 inches or more(boston) should be interesting.

  Solara,

You have the "Machine" to handle it!! Have fun.

Also on another post you said your hands are warm, but toes cold.

In very cold temps the body pulls blood back to protect the vital organs.

So hand and feet are cold.

Solution, more layers on your body and feet will stay warmer!!!!

My friend and I adjusted his new Ariens 1332LE, cost $1316.00 yesterday and going to try it out today!!

Not as good a price as your purchase!! But not bad.

Worked out well, Solara.....but that's a typical Home Depot screw up.

I had carpet installed this year and the installer padded the measurements by 12 yds in order to get extra profit.

The they tried to bait and switch me on the padding...They tried to install 3/8 instead of the 1/2 inch that I paid for.

My family and I had to spend the night in a Hotel and have dinner out ( during  sleet and freezing rain )

After much wrangling I made them cough up about $900.00 to cover the Hotel, Dinner and extra carpet.....

I try to go to Lowe's now whenever I can.

Solara, you Stepped In It Good!! God Bless You!!

Heck, that ain't a deal, that's a bargain.    I've been looking at HD every chance I get for a 2 stage Toro, but haven't ever seen one there.  Mine had a bent auger housing.  Make sure that you don't have any problems like that!    I would like to know why is makes the horrible sound, and does nothing to that starter.

My Honda manual states that it will damage the starter to pull it while the engine is running....
