Older Toro Snowblower 5hp 24", el. start, owners manual/advice
Original Message   Jan 4, 2009 7:03 pm
Hi there, cleaned out my parents garage and came across an old snowblower, probably 20 years old.  Its a Toro 5hp, 24",electric start, 4 stroke, all red. Could not get a model # off the engine. Want to fire it up, however don't have oil capacity or specs for a replacement plug.  Looking for a manual or info to start this process.  Appreciate any advice.

I'd pull the carb float bowl as well to make sure there's no debris in it.  It will also be a good indicator of the rest of the fuel system.   MacLorry gave you a lot of good guidance.  Take your time to go over the machine.  Clean it up and lube where ever it looks like it needs it.  Check the chains inside the housing.  Give them some oil if they're rusty.  Be very careful not to get oil on the drive disk and wheel.  If you do, the machine will not move and you'll have a nasty job cleaning it off.  If you can pull the wheels off, do so and give the axles a coat of grease (marine or snowmobile grease will do).  Check the intake on the carb to make sure you don't have a rat's nest in there.  It should be as clean as a whistle. Spray some light machine oil into the spark plug hole and pull the engine over slowly a few times to give the piston a bit of lube.   Keep in touch an let us know how it fires up.

To get a manul for your Toro 521, which is what I think it is, go to this web page.

Put 38052 in the "Enter Model number" box and click SEARCH, then click on the year you think the machine was made in. Next click Manuals in the Get More Information menu.  Click on the Operator Manual [ English ] link to download the manul as a PDF.  Save it to your hard dirve so you will have it in the future.

Thanks for all the suggestions & advice.  I did find the correct yr & model, 1977  524 model.  MacLorry27, I tried  downloading the manual without success, that said any suggestions where a no-charge one is available.

Thanks all,
