changing pully sizes ?
Original Message   Jan 14, 2005 6:57 pm
hi everyone,

got a question concerning pully sizing..........over on the IH CC forum theres a person that changed a tractor mounted single stage thrower pully from 3.5 inches to 2.5 inches and shows pics of the enormous difference in distances..............is this an  accepted method of improving snowthrowers in your opinion?................i was thinking ,after seeing this ,about trying this idea out on my JD tractor mounted thrower but would be concerned about damage that could happen................

any ideas or opinions ?

thanks,

bill

When we were kids...

...my cousin and I changed a pulley size and belt on our Uncle's  riding lawnmower to make it go faster...

WOW... did it !

But... it blew up after 15 minutes...

I must be missing something here. If you are decreasing the size of the pulley on the engine aren't you slowing down the auger? If so then you have more power and can crunch through harder stuff but you're not going to throw it as far.

You can calculate the speed change by looking at the ratio of either the radii , diameters or circumference. Since most peole talk in terms of diameter  I'll use that.

I'm assuming we are taling about the pulley on the engine.

3" to 4" is 4/3 ~ 1.33 or about a 1/3 increase in the RPM of the auger It will throw snow farther and process snow faster but will get bogged down faster. Gas consumption might be higher as well.

I believe he would be decreasing the pulley size on the snowblower attachment, which would indeed speed it up.

Don't ever change pulleys the machine is built like that the ratio would affect power of engine and causing damage too think of it

Been changing pulley raitos all the time  with the single stage your auger has a reduction for the auger drum through the sprockets  formula is the same dia. or  # teeth on a sprocket  20 T  on driver  60T  on driven  raito  3:1 .But remember  increase in speed decrease in torque.

sorry i couldn't get back before now..........................

i would be reducing the pully on the blower itself.......................

more speed would be good for powdery snow (if we ever get any )...........

no torque for the wet stuff is what i dont like...................

maybe i'll just keep it stock , it might work well enough like that.....................

thanks for the replies , they helped alot ,

bill
