Toro 826 LE - Is plastic a problem
Original Message   Feb 26, 2007 3:10 pm
Stopped at my local Home Depot today and they were selling a 2006 model year Toro 826 LE for $500, vs. $799 for the Ariens 926 and a Cub Cadet model. What concerned me about the Toro was the plastic chute and the plastic area over the auger. The Home Depot salesman said they'd had a couple Toros returned with cracked plastic caused when people picked up a rock.

My questions: Does the more extensive use of plastic in the Toro make it more prone to problems, vs. the more heavily-steeled Ariens and Cub Cadet? I would be using it on a paved driveway.

Is the Toro, at $300 less, a good deal?

I bought the Toro 826LE last week online at Home Depot less 20%.  What a machine!  This is my third snowblower, and the other two don't compare.  My last one was an MTD 10.5 29'' and it was nothing but trouble.  I went through MTD and the BBB to try and resolve and was not treated fairly.  Anyway, the 8HP Toro throws snow up to 45' and it is no exaggeration.  The plastic chute is not a concern - i have never owned anything but plastic chutes, and never encountered a problem on the occasion i did hit a rock.  Buy a Toro - they are well built and worth the money.

Yes it is ,But if it brakes try to get the warrenty out of HD. I just bought a 826 from a toro dealer and he told me that HD wont fix it if it brakes they will have to send it out and it will take about 4-6 weeks to get it back(hope it doesn't snow between that time)HD is a box store and if you think for a minute that thay have the CONSUMERS BEST INTREST AT HEART YOU ARE SADLY MISTAKEN. Oh the 4-6 weeks that happen to me on a cordless drill i bought from HD that i only owned for 9 months. I will go to the local hardware store befoer i buy anything from HD. AKA HOME CHEAPO.

I paied $950 for mine and if it brakes i can have fixed in 24 hours or less including warrenty Now thats a piece of mind.

we happen to be a toro/lawnboy service and warranty center up here in minnesota.  we will do any warranty for either product regardless of where purchased.   this is just good customer service to do this.      1  very strong suggestion to anyone buying from a chain store, menards home depot lowes,  is to make sure you and only you send in your warranty registration.  do not leave that up to home depot.  guaranteed the will throw it out.  i see that so many time in this shop.  the will kiss your ass to make a sale and when you are out the door they really dont care if you come back or not.   buy wisely.

I've had one of those great machines for 3 winters. It has eaten literally a ton of large gravel with no problems to the plastic or anything else. It is a superb machine. At that price you should wear a mask when you buy it.

While many different brands have their own unique features,I would NOT recommend anything TORO,you are basically paying for a Murrary or MTD with a unrealistic price tag<(Paying for the name) !!!  I cannot be honest enuff about their products,I used to work for them and they have no want nor appreciation for "Quality",it's all about the bottomline dollar and getting it out the door. Toro buys up their competetion and then runs them into the ground or sells off what they don't want and runs back to Minneapolis. If you check out there Dunn and Bradstreet history it is quite the story of such.

Those are very interesting comments SS and especially from someone that once worked for the company.
I had been misled into thinking that the aquisition of Gilson and Lawnboy were more beneficial too those companys than they were for toro.
My impression was that they were 2 companies that really werent keeping up with times and were floundering because of it.
Outside of a market area in the south for Lawnboy and a hardcore group of enthusists in the north for gilson, it didnt seem like either company was doing much too compete or were doing anything different than they had done for the previous 40 years.
Although I've had no problems with Toro's reputation or quality, it's  good too hear things from someone from the inside and and get some objective balance too our perceptions.
Good post, SS.
