Briggs SQ
Original Message   May 10, 2005 12:14 am
I have a member in the family that just purchased a mower with a Briggs & Stratton SQ engine.  We are puzzled about what SQ stands for.  Does anyone know?

Ajay....
It must either mean Sh*tty Quality or maybe Sprint/Quattro clone.
I dont think Briggs really knows either....  Specks
You might notice that they have a picture of the engine...It clearly shows a carb that is mounted on the fuel tank, which means it has a primer that is located on the side of the plastic carb.
Then if you look directly below that engine picture...you will see 4 smaller photographs...( a primer, a module, sump cover, and a dipstick.)
Drag your cursor over the primer and click it and a larger picture of the primer system should appear....That shows a common Quantam style primer system...located on the backing plate which uses the 491588 paper air filter element. (Further down they make a big deal about the foam air filter that it uses.)
Now that may not be a big deal for most folks.....but it kinda gets a giggle out of me.
Superb Quality control, no doubt.

Thanks, no one seems to know.  lol  This is the engine he bought.  Maybe Snowshovler knows.  I'll email Briggs and try to get an answer.

I got the reply from Briggs & Stratton today.  Here it is:
Thank you for contacting Briggs & Stratton eCustomer Support!

Actually, the "SQ" does not stand for anything or have any significant meaning.

actually...those letters arent from our alphabet as we know it.

that engine design is so antiquated that they used ancient heiroglyphs from the middle east to describe its function.

it actually translates into ...MADE BY LONG LOST AMERICAN INDIANS...AKA TECUMSEH and FLYING  TURD.

sorry i wasnt much help earlier with this but i had to do a lot of research into this and it takes a while sometimes.

Thanks, for your help Chris.  I take it that Briggs doesn't know what SQ stands for because Tecumseh has a part in making the engine?  That's what I got out of what you said.
