Also, look at the National Association of Insurance Commissioner's website for tips as well as a link to your state and the companies insuring there, along with some typical rates for various homeowner insurance coverage.
Look at consumer guides. Ask your friends if they are confident in their insurer. But price alone shouldn't be the deciding factor. First, make sure they have a good financial rating with AM Best or Standard & Poors, and are responsive to their policy holders. If you can't get a hold of people or the company has a bad ranking, then bypass for a company that is reachable and reliable.
