Designer or General Contractor

A general contractor can many times provide the know-how that you would be getting from a designer. If you know exactly what you want done and how, the contractor may be all you need. However, if you have had a designer work with you on your project, you will need someone that can take those ideas and make them a reality in your home. The contractor will make the job happen by doing the work him/herself or by subcontracting out some of the work.

If you are doing major add-on work to your house, you will need an architect to provide detailed construction blueprints in order to define the contract with the contractor and to get the permits necessary to do the work. In choosing an architect, make sure they have done remodeling work before and are willing to sign on to the size of the project you anticipate.

If you have a simpler remodel, you may just need a licensed designer who can provide those necessary blueprints or drawings. Look for one that is experienced in the area you are remodeling. Some designers specialize in kitchen redos while others rework the flow of the home or design new spaces.

Sometimes it makes more sense to hire one group that can provide you with all the necessary talent and skill under one roof. The design and build company will provide the design and the construction for the project and be there from the beginning to final flourish. This is a good option when you are concerned about budget, as they can better keep things under control than if you are dealing with a number of different firms.
