Like everything I buy, I researched digital cameras for over a year before I finally made my purchase. I read online reviews, I lurked in forums, I spoke with family members and friends who had digital cameras, and looked at thousands of digital pics. There is such a huge selection and variety out there, the only way I could decide was to make a list of what features I had to have, the maximum I would spend, and then compare what was available.
The must haves were: At least a 10x optical zoom a minimum of 4 mp the ability to use AA Nimh batteries a reliable manufacturer maximum price of $330.00 with required accessories
The S5100 met all of my minimum requirements, plus a few that I didn't know I wanted until I went out and started playing with various brands and models. The S5100 just jumped right up into my hand - a perfect fit for me. It is well balanced, to the point that I can turn it on, zoom in or out, and take a picture with one hand. The controls are logically placed and very easy to operate. The picture quality is excellent, and has so many features, I haven't had a chance to explore them all yet. It takes good quality video with sound as well. A set of four 2400 Nexcell Nimh AA batteries lasts a long time.
