How to choose the best bike for you

Whether you are purchasing a bicycle for the physical benefits or for the economical benefits, the three “f’s” are crucial when choosing the proper bike for you. Those “f’s” would be function, frame and fit.

Are you going to ride on wild terrain or  on city streets? The function of the bike is crucial. Then the frame of the bike needs to be taken into consideration. What will it be made of – steel, the light weight aluminum, the even lighter weight titanium, or any of the new cutting edge man made materials. Each material has its best application.

Mountain bikes are the heaviest (20 to 30 pounds) due to the wide rims and shock absorption mechanisms. If you have Tour de France aspirations, you will need a lightweight bike, some going as low as 15 pounds. Then there are the relaxing, bike to the grocery store bikes that weigh in over 30 pounds.

Once you choose the appropriate frame for your bike’s function, make sure it fits you. You will need to be comfortable in arm and leg reach, as well as in the seat. Don’t skimp on adjustments as the more pleasurable the biking experience, the more you will actually use the bike.
