Auto insurance fight in CA

Insurance companies repping about 90 percent of California drivers are claiming unfair auto rating regs in California and taking the state’s Department of Insurance to court. The regulations in question give more weight to a driver's driving record and the amount of miles driven than their residence when calculating auto insurance rates.

Insurers say more than 60 per cent of drivers will be paying more so others will be paying less. The idea is that if you live in a rural area, you pay as much or more as a driver with a comparable record who lives in questionable neighborhoods in say, LA, even though the likelihood of car damage is higher in the highly congested city, in essence subsidizing the urban driver. Superior Court has a couple of weeks to schedule a hearing.
